My lesson

One of the easiest and quickest ways to become present and aware is to let go of ‘your story’ and all the wanting that goes with it.  It is often because of ‘our stories’ that we have unrealistic expectations of ourselves and everyone and everything around us.

The story of how I received this lesson.

One day on my CST training I walked into a room where there were quite a few of my friends and my partner, at that time, was sitting talking.  I wanted her to pay me attention as I was feeling upset and I needed comforting.  So I went and sat next to her.  At first my partner did not acknowledge my arrival.  Instantly I went into my old story “they don’t care…  I am not important…  I’m not seen”.

Then my partner without saying a word spun around on the bench, pulled me towards her, swinging my legs around and hugged me from behind.  As a result of them continuing their conversation, the old pattern continued.  It was so strong, a voice in my head said “I’m not important enough to talk to”.

It was at this moment that I realised that I was not being present.  My needs were met, I was being held.  I manage to let go of ‘my story’ and all the wanting that went with it.  It was then that I became present.  In this moment I was filled with so much joy.  My friend commented “you look like you don’t have a care in the world”.  All I could do was look at her and nod.

It was then that I realised that the easiest and quickest way to become present and aware is to let go of ‘your story’ and all the wanting and expectations, of yourself and others, that goes with it.

How this has impacted my life

This has had a profound effect on my life.  Whenever I become aware that I am not feeling good, I check to see if:

  • I might be getting into ‘my story’?
  • Are my thoughts and feelings about this moment or are they being triggered from the past?
  • Are my needs being met?
  • Do I have any expectations?
  • Are these expectations realistic?
  • Are these expectations coming from me or are they just part of my conditioning and ‘story’?

I encourage you to practice the questioning above to get to know how much effect ‘your story’ has on how you experience your life.  I think you will begin to realise that most of the time ‘your story’ just adds to you feeling miserable.

As you start to let it go and become present, you will be present to help you feel the joy inside of you.

If you do not have my grounding MP3, reply to this email and I will send it to you.  If you can please remember to answer my questions above.  Thank you.

NOW

Now I just return to being in the present moment and all my needs fall away.

Let it go, by letting it be there.

Letting go by letting it be there. I too am practising this although I didn’t realised this in such a simple/profound way you did. I like your questions? Have you read “The Presence Process” by Michael Brown or hear of Focusing developed by Eugene Gendlin? When will you be in London again? I’d like to meet you some day.

Thank you I am glad that it has helped you see how simple it is to be present and how when you are present everything that is not the real you just drops away. I hope to be in London running workshops next year x

Thanks for this post Fiona. My emotions have been in tatters recently and reading this reminded me that
I was getting into ‘my story’. Sometimes we just need that timely reminder and helpful questions. Thank you.

I’d like to the MP3 please. Can you send me the email link please?
