There really is one word that can change your life?

It is what my last blog post was getting at.  Then what happened to me this morning brought this ‘lesson’ back to me again:

Last year I injured my hips through a series of small accidents and was not able to exercise for four months. At the beginning of March I was able to return to a fairly active lifestyle.  However, in the mean time I have put on some weight and what is even more shocking to me is that my body fat percentage has increased and I now have fat where never before in my life did I have it, around my middle!

So last week I joined a weight lose program at the gym.  All week I managed not to have the odd beer, while my friends drank in the sun and I have cut out stodgy carbohydrates, apart from the odd crumpet.  So this morning I felt pleased with myself and thought that I must of lost some weight and I certainly feel like I have reduced my fat percentage.  When I was weighed I had put on .3kg!  My first response was sadness, closely followed by disbelieve then anger.

My rationale mind decided that I must of lost fat and gain muscle, muscle weighs more than fat.  So I demanded, yes I know not very enlightened of me, a fat % test.  The machine was jumping all over the place and would not work.  So I went and killed myself for the next 30 minutes in the group exercise class.

It was only after the class when I was stretching out my old injuries that the ‘lesson’ was delivered.  What am I getting at?

A: Why

I had followed the instructors advice and set a goal for myself of brining my fat percentage down to less than 25% and ideally 22%.  I had set a why, I want to be fit and healthy again.  I was sad and mad this morning because I perceived I had moved further away from my goal.  Another lesson was that the forced attempt at tying to put right my perception was not externally available from the machine.  (Only you can change your perception, it is an inside job).

So if I had a goal and a why for the goal, what went wrong?  The lesson is that the why that is important is Why I had signed up for the weight lose program.  This Why is because I enjoy working out, I needed the commitment of a scheduled time (not to be distracted by clients and other business matters) and I enjoy other people’s company whilst exercising hard.

The Why that is important is to enjoy Why you are doing something.

If you do this the outcome will take care of its self.

Most goals require commitment but if you do not enjoy the journey to get there you are likely to fail.

I wholeheartedly agree Fiona and have had a similar experience. Let’s enjoy our experiences knowing that it is doing our body good whilst spending time working out with friends. Many blessings Denise xx

Great post, Fiona. Guess it’s the journey not the destination that’s important. Keep up the good work!

Similar….. recently enjoying spending time feeling close to nature, working in the outdoors in my new garden. Handling the earth in my fingers, spending time in the sunshine and sometimes the wind. Working in the sensory environment using touch, sound (wind in trees, birds singing, wind chimes), visual – colour of plants, leaves and blossom and the beautiful red breast of my new friend the Robin! I am simply working in my little garden and enjoying the results of my attention but also the effects on my body and mind are not unexpected, but the wonderful side effect of doing something you enjoy without a direct goal at the end of it other than pleasure! I get my information from my own guidance, through being aware in my life. Awareness (and acceptance) really is the Key to life, see my “The Key to Awareness” page and manual. Thank you Argo 🙂

    Hi Fiona

I really liked the point that you made about Why? We all ask ourselves this question without actually coming up with the right answer! Thanks for putting it in a different perspective… i will try to do the same 🙂
