I spend a lot of my time watching ducks.  They have a whole range of movements and behaviours.  At the moment, quite a few have chicks and I have seen them get noisy and protective.  As soon as whatever it is that triggered this behaviour is gone the duck returns to what ever they were doing or does something else, as if nothing happened.

The main thing that strikes me when I watch ducks is that they are always themselves and express themselves completely.  I have never seen or felt that a duck is low, unhappy and certainly not depressed.  In fact most of the time they feel very contented to me.

What is their secret?  A duck knows it is a duck; it follows its instincts and enjoys its ‘duckness’.

“But they don’t have to work in a job they hate” or “Ferry their kids around everywhere” or “They have it easy” or “They don’t think”; or do we!  It is our so called higher intelligence and ability to think and to keep thinking that gets us in trouble.  Is it not?

When was the last time you kicked of your shoes and enjoyed the feel of the grass?  Have you ever let go and allowed yourself to be, without thinking about the end result.

Being does not mean the absence of doing, it means being fully in, fully concentrating, being present, in whatever you’re ‘doing’ especially if this is just sitting with you’re eyes closed enjoying you’re beingness.

What is the secret of being?

Thank you for the inspiration to return to Being (and return, and return…). I love your spot-on reminder that Being is not the absence of doing. What a relief in these busy times!

Thank you, indeed Being is a state of mind, body and heart and can be there at all times even in the busiest, most hectic environment.

Yes, it seems to me, whether your a duck or a pigeon or a person, that the secret is Being In The Moment. For animals and other beings without higher thought processes, it seems so easy. Whatever comes, they deal or not, it’s all the same. But for those of us with higher thought processes, some monkeys, apes, and people (at least most people ;)) it appears to be extremely difficult. Why? Is it because we are aware of our limitedness? That we can die? Or is it because we are no longer living life as we were designed to live? As our DNA and our instincts would have us living? Is it our lifestyle? Wow, these are interesting questions. Anyone else have thoughts on this subject?

I just want to add a note about monkey research they’ve done (which I don’t approve as I think it quite cruel, but they do it anyway) when they remove babies from their mothers as infants and give them wooden surrogates. For these babies, there is no longer the option or chance to live as a monkey because they don’t learn how, nor do they learn to Be a monkey, or how to socialize, so is it all learned behavior? Or is the fact that we have interrupted the normal cycle of life the issue? Are the monkeys responding to our expectations? Oh my, so many questions spin off your post…

    Namaste,

The monkey research was used as supporting evidence for John Bowlby’s Attachment Theory; the conclusion of which is that for anyone, animal or human to develop ‘normally’ and have acceptable levels of intelligence and emotional intelligence the most important thing they needed as babies and when developing was love.

I believe that receiving love gives you the ability to accept and love other people and ourselves. It is acceptance that enables us to love ourselves and it is acceptance that enables us to be in the moment. Being in the moment leads to loving yourself and loving yourself leads to being in the moment. So to be clear you can start with love or with being in the moment and they will lead to each other.

I dream of a world where everyone accepts everyone as this would also be a world full of love, nonviolence and nonjudgmental. Let’s empower ourselves to be in the moment, sign up to my website to receive free energy and inspiration http://www.RealEnergy4All.com

I´ve been reading your blog for awhile and also it never occurred to me to comment. That is completely ironic, for the reason that I´ve spent a lot of time over the history few months studying what it takes to make people comment on my own website. After reading a couple of your posts I guess it´s controversial topics that stir people´s emotions to the point exactly where they can´t simply just ´let it go.´
